There are a number of events that people can participate in or attend in recognition of Veterans Day.
This year, two major events that saw considerable Memphis VAMC involvement was the downtown Memphis Veterans Day Parade and the annual Memphis National Cemetery Veterans Day program.
Memphis Veterans Day Parade
In recognition of Veterans Day, every year the City of Memphis hosts a parade through downtown Memphis. A variety of groups participate to include the Memphis VA Medical Center staff, Veterans, and their family members who are invited to walk or drive with us through the parade path. Turn out is impressive every year in both those who show up to be in the parade and for those who show up to watch the parade. The parade took place on Friday, November 11th.
Memphis National Cemetery Veterans Day Ceremony
On November 12, 2011, the Memphis National Cemetery located at 3568 Townes Avenue hosted their annual Veterans Day program. Dr. James L. Robinson III, Medical Center Director at Memphis VAMC was the keynote speaker. In addition, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-District 9), and Mark H. Luttrell, Shelby County Mayor were speakers at the event.
